Dorothy's birth record has not been found among the Anglican records of the Parish of Maugerville, nor in Gagetown, though some births are recorded from this time period for her neighbours. Her approximate birthdate is known from censuses and her tombstone.
Dorothy grew up in New Brunswick, but by 1809 she and her relatives were in Prince Edward County, Ontario, where Dorothy married at West Lake in 1810. She was likely married in the West Lake Meeting building built in 1803. "The building has been described by one who remembered it as a log house with the usual removable, wooden partition dividing the men's from the women's side, with a capacity of about two hundred. It stood on a height of land still known as Bowerman's Hill, overlooking what was then the northeastern portion of West Lake; but what is now a broad expanse of marsh... By 1817 the old log meeting house on Bowerman's Hill was no longer adequate, and it was proposed to erect a new meeting house about two miles east of the former site on the edge of the rising village of Bloomfield. Sufficient land, about six acres in all, was also procured for a burying ground across the road to the south of the meeting house..." (BOOK66: Dorland, A.G. The Quakers in Canada: A History)
19 July 1810: "John Richmond and Dorothy Hutchenson appeared in this meeting and desired our Answer to their proposed marriage they having consent of parents and nothing appearing to obstruct they are left at liberty to consumate their marriage agreeable to the good order used amongst us. Jehabod Bowerman and Cornelius Blount are appointed to attend the marriage and report."
16 Aug 1810: "The friends appointed to attend the marriage of John Richmond report they attended and it was orderly conducted and produced the Marriage Certificate which is directed to be recorded and handed to Joel Haight or that purpose" (West Lake Quaker Meeting records)The couple had moved north to Murray Township and had two children by the time the 1814 census was taken for the township. "Just to the north of Prince Edward County, across the Bay of Quinte in the Township of Murray, a few Friends had been holding a meeting for worship since 1815 at Cold Creek. In 1820 the Meeting was held at the house of Samuel Clapp, and remained for a number of years under the care of a committee which visited the Meeting at stated intervals and reported its progress to Adolphustown Monthly Meeting. In 1821, however, when A'town MM was discontinued and became a part of West Lake MM, Cold Creek passed under the control of the new MM. Early in 1824 the Meeting at Cold Creek was discontinued for a short period by West Lake MM, owing to the fewness of its numbers and 'a want of right unity in the Friends constituting it.' But later in the same year, a meeting for worship was again allowed under the care of a committee. In 1825 a request was sent to West Lake MM 'for a Meeting for worship and a Preparative Meeting at or near John Richmond's, to be called Cold Creek Preparative Meeting.' The request was granted..." The opening of the new Meeting at Cold Creek was performed in August 1826. (BOOK66: Dorland, A.G. The Quakers in Canada: A History)
Dorothy and her family appear in the Murray censuses regularly until John Richmond's death on the "8th of 3rd month 1841 in the 54th year of his age" (tombstone). Dorothy is listed with her son Marmaduke in 1842 and 1851, and with her daughter Hannah Brock in 1861. At her death in 1864, Dorothy was buried beside her husband.
