Some Descendants of Lucas WITBECK (Luke Woodbeck)

First Generation

1. Lucas WITBECK was born on 16 Jan 1788 in Claverack, Columbia, New York, USA. He was christened on 10 Feb 1788 in Claverack, Columbia, New York, USA. He died before 1851. He was buried in Seymour L26 C2, Northumberland, Ontario, Canada.

Luke Woodbeck and his wife Phoebe were both born in Columbia County, NY, where baptism records show the original spellings of their names as "Luycas Wittbeck" and "Fitje VanDeusen." The couple moved from Claverack, NY to Sidney Township, Hastings County, Ontario about 1820, bringing with them at least four children. (I have not found any record of the eldest, Lydia, after 1810.)

Burton Woodbeck states that the Woodbeck family first settled on Oak Lake's south shore, which lies at the north edge of the 7th Concession of Sidney. I have not yet been able to varify this claim, yet daughter Lucinda had her first child in Sidney Township about 1825, which lends support to Burton's account. Son James' marriage record indicates the family was in Huntingdon Township about 1829, and Matthew's marriage record indicates he was born in Rawdon about 1830. Other records indicate the family was in the Hoard's Station/Brinkworth area of Seymour and Rawdon Townships, and Burton claims Luke was buried in Seymour at the old Hoard's Cemetery, which no longer exists. Regardless, after Luke's death, and widow Phoebe was back in Sidney with sons James and Matthew for the 1851 census, and then back in Seymour by 1861. There were no Woodbecks in Sidney by 1861.

Lucas married Fitje VAN DEUSEN daughter of Mattheus VAN DEUSEN and Catherina LIVINGSTON about 1806 in Claverack, Columbia Co, New York, USA. Fitje was born on 15 Apr 1787 in Copake, Columbia Co, New York, USA. She was christened on 7 Jun 1789 in West Copake, Columbia Co, New York, USA. She died after 1861. She was buried in Seymour L26 C2, Northumberland, Ontario, Canada.
