Our story opens at the Northern end of the Gamboge Forest. It is late afternoon as a five wagon caravan leaves the oppressive canopy of the Gamboge to find itself on the southern plains of the Theocracy of the Pale, under darkening skies with a heavy threat of rain. The temperature on this 1st of Growfest, somewhat north in the Flanaess is not much above freezing, so the thought of being cold and wet appeals to no-one along for the ride. Arymur, leader of the caravan, looks towards the mountains to the East where the clouds are darkest. He watches for a moment and does a calculation. The clouds are headed down to the plains where they travel. The caravan will have to hurry to reach the nearest inn before whatever those dark clouds hold will be upon the caravan.
Arymur is trying to bring all 92 pounds of his tall, lithe form to bear in order to guide his lead wagon carefully across the ford of a fast-flowing stream when suddenly a hoarse cry is heard. It sounds somewhat like, "Azzarr Kooole!" The porters, messengers and assorted adventurers in the wagons look at each other nervously, but nobody seems to know what this shout means or what language it was uttered in. Jericho, the young man from Greyhawk, makes a joke to those around him, trying to keep calm. His comment is mostly directed at Lindalee, the red-haired girl of five and ten who is travelling alone with the caravan.
Moments later the caravan is attacked from both sides. Tall hairy creatures wearing mismatched plate and scale mail and armed with javelins and swords come at the group, shouting unintelligible things and throwing their javelins. Five hired guards spring into action. Two of them had lead the way over the stream and are now caught on the other side, horsed with no way back, as the lead wagon blocks the ford. They dismount almost as one and run back to the lead wagon, drawing weapons as they go. The paladin Yaryas of Ogburg wades in as close to the wagon as he can get and works his way across the stream. Meanwhile, one of the other horsed guards, Annakel, spurs his horse towards the enemy. There are more of them every second. The other guard, a white-bearded dwarf named Arcturus, dismounts, not ready to try and wield his two-handed hammer ”from the back of some four-legged beastie!” Chert, who was riding with Arymur and a messenger heading to Ogburg leaps out of the back of the wagon to try and intercept the attacking creatures. There are more of these creatures every moment.
An even larger one of the hairy creatures comes around the side of a hill on horseback. It seems these horrid things can ride as well as the caravan guard (at least one of them can, anyway). He (or it) throws his javelin and takes out one of the young porters that accompany the caravan.
Bannner, the Paynim nomad, leaps out of the wagon he is riding in and runs right at the hairy creature on the horse, he whips out a somewhat battered-looking battle axe and throws it full force at the mounted creature. The throw is ill-timed, however, and the creature dodges it easily.
It seems the hairy creatures have each only brought a single javelin, because they throw one each and then close on the caravan and its defenders.
Emma, a lithe lass in her mid-twenties who had been boasting proudly not minutes before that she was “a thief, dammit, and PROUD of it” leaps out of the rear wagon and attempts to fire her crossbow at one of the hairy creatures, half-hidden behind a tree. She is unable to hit it.
Jericho leaps onto the seat of the wagon, and then onward to stand on the horse that pulls his wagon. From there he fires at another of the creatures, wounding it.
One of the other guards, the paladin Gravpon the Stout, tries to maneuver past the lead wagon and loses his footing. He falls into the stream and the strong current washes him downstream!
The battle rages for several minutes
