18th Sunsebb
The party decides to regroup after the battle with the frogs. They retreat back to the verge of the wild woods and rest for the night. Thoravald seems to find his focus and re-evaluates the spells he prepares the next morning. The party sets out once again, working their way back to the pond they killed. A'Ha's hawk and Thoravald in hawk form scout ahead, and see a large clearing far off that has a tower and a sort of cliff area behind it. They return to the party with this news, and the party continues forward.
A clearing soon presents itself, and the party has apparently learned from past experiences not to trust anything that appears in a clearing. There is a rather nicely-shaped topiary in the clearing, cut to resemble a huge wolf. The party turns away to discuss options, and when they look back, it is apparent that the head hasmoved, although nobody saw it happen. Thoravald uses his speak with plants spell to communicate with the plant, and what-do-ya-know it's intelligent.
They discover that the Baron Von Orchid has visited it in the past, bringing "scurry purries" to eat and is often accompanied by two four legged creatures that have "thorn tails". Not much else can be gleaned, but Thoravald advises the topiary (which refers to itself as "Hedge") that they are friends of "the boss" (as Hedge referes to the Baron) and are supposed to go see him. Hedge allows them past.
Not long after this the party finds themselves walking beside a stream. They are attacked by missiles apparently fired on by bull rushes! A'Ha is almost killed, and Thoravald is greatly weakened by the creatures sucking away his strength. The party manages to get past this field of bull-rushes, but are now stuck deep in the Baron's Woods with no way to get back and no apparent place to rest to gain more spells and turn S'Part back into something with arms and a mouth so they can get the benefit of his healing.
From the diary of El'Fross:
By the next morning I no longer felt much animosity towards Snf’l. It was as if the battle had happened a year ago... long forgotten water under a bridge.
However, some things never change. And soon the well oiled machine that is the Clan K’nee once again demonstrated its tactical prowess.
As we continued to meander through this weird forest, searching for the twisted Druid who had created it, we came to a portion of the path with a river flowing by it. Attacked by the grass itself around the river, Thoravald and I used our quick wits to spring ahead down the trail to avoid these deadly creations.
The rest of the group used their quit wits to flail around madly, stand in stunned confusion, and polymorph our only healer into a handless bird…. Let me pause a moment and repeat that….
A HANDLESS BIRD; incapable of casting a cure spell.
I fear A’ha’s brain has been addled by his many experiences with death, Snf’l will do anything he is asked so long as it keeps him out of harms way, and poor dear L’wen spends more time waiting for something to do, than doing. I fear for my dear brethren and what they would do without my guidance.
At least the druid seemed to show some sense at long last. Coderick also seems to have the right idea, unfortunately his short little legs generally get him to where he needs to be a few seconds later than he’d like.
After freeing the druid from the grasp of a few of these grassy tentacles, with the help of Siroth the Bear, I ran back to L’Wen to shield her from the deadly attacks while helping her escape. Snf’l did the same for A’ha, who was very nearly killed yet again. I suspect Snf’l is feeling a bit bad, and perhaps protective for having killed A’ha those other three or four times.
At any rate, we can’t turn back, we’re hurt, and our only cleric is now a hawk who can’t cure anyone. In other words, situation normal; we’ve got him right where we want him.
