I have to go back a little farther than 1985.
--snip really dull Jeff history--
Then, by strange chance, when Jeff went to tell Sunil about this neat
new game sometime in January, Sunil had just been invited to play with a
bunch of "other" people by Randy Way (whom, as it turns out, was a buddy
of Steve's in an earlier incarnation, ie, in Grade 9 when they both went
to Central, and who would turn out to be the sister of [redacted]).
This was a whole different crowd and Jeff met a lot of people here, none
of whom ever come into this story again but all of whom were really
important in their day and the source of many many good times.
In the spring of 1983 Jeff went to a D&D game with Sunil and some others
among whom was Fred, whom Sunil had met at the International Students
Association at the U.
That fall, Jeff started classes himself, moving into College West. It
should be noted that by this time he was seeing less and less of people
like Paul Baconfield and Russ Eckstein, for various reasons.
The Boys 520 included Jeff, Murray, Kevin and Richard. Richard was from
Redvers and was the only person that Leen (who lived down on 4th floor)
knew in Regina, so through Richard (who was a retard, and exits very
quickly from this tale) Jeff and his new friends Kevin and Murray met
Leen.
We also met Andy about this time, but I'm not sure how. He lived in 512,
I seem to recall. Also, at the first College West dance of the year
"Carel" Sadlowski and Darrin Bailey went from table to table of people
they didn't know saying "Hi...we're Carel and Darrin and we're *not*
your RA's..."
Murray was very popular because he had a computer in his room and a
really neat game called "Loderunner" on it. In September of that year
Murray met this dippy brunette named Holly Carswell, who by October had
moved in to Murray and Kevin's room (leading to "The Case of the Crusty
Pillow"). Also that fall Jeff met Scott Boyes, in passing, in Soc Sci
101 (Introduction to the Marxist Perspective on Mass Media).
Fred and Jeff got to be pretty tight in those days, both being evil
biker dudes. In 1984-1985, Jeff started playing D&D with a group that
played at College West, was run by Gary and included (or grew to
include) Scott Boyes (see above), Andy, Leen, Kevin, and others. (Maybe
Scott can flesh out this bit). Jeff brought Sunil, Fred and Bug with
him, for which Gary was not to forgive him.
The classic lines from this campaign were "Cut the ropes! Cut the
ropes!" and "Amulric...I am going to kill you!"
Later that winter semester (March 1985) Jeff met Kathy Wilde and her
friend Joan. Kathy being terribly cute, Jeff decided to spend more time
with this bunch, and managed to get himself invited to a late night D&D
game at - of all people - Dave Roberts' house. Steve was there, a person
who Jeff originally thought was Kathy's boyfriend.
This was the infamous "kill the biker" game. It should be noted that it
was Gary's idea to get the other characters - okay, Steve, specifically
- to kill the biker guy's character, and later that spring Gary was
thrown from a moving vehicle, hit his head and was never quite the same
thereafter. Coincidence? You be the judge.
Jeff never did make it anywhere in his pursuit of Kathy, altho' they had
some very nice times together riding Jeff's motorcycle and visiting Gary
in the hospital. In July Jeff moved to Vancouver for 4 months to work,
thus missing out on the First Round Lake trip.
When Jeff returned in October he was invited to a D&D game at Murray's
place ("Castle Amber" for those who were there). This was a very good
campaign, but the best part was going to the bar afterwards. On one of
the first bar trips he and Steve discovered they had much in common and
became fast friends after Steve apologized for trying to kill him at
Gary's instigation earlier that year.
There is a bit of confusion about dates and stuff, ie, Shelley wasn't at
the 1985 Round Lake cuz she was still in Imperial just thinking about
going to University. But Scott did get horribly pissed and make a pass
at Kathy which did fail. So he's got that part right. And John, I didn't
realize you were in Hayford/Conway's Social Science 100 class
(Introduction to Mass Media) with Scott in the fall of 1983...I just
remember Scott from there. I suppose with the beard he was a little more
memorable. Or terrifying.
I can see someone is going to have to sit down with this and work out a
chronology.
I think we're still sitting around late 1985 or early 1986 at this
point....hmm...
It seems to me that we left off in sort of a grey area between
1985-1987. Lots of things happened those years including our
introduction to various types of Schnapps and of course Southern
Comfort. Plus poker - a part of our life so important that Faye Rafter,
Manager of College West, later referred to us as "The Poker Gang". Steve
bought his motorcycle that year, which was good because Fred stopped
riding and it gave Our Boy Jeff someone to boot around with.
Ummm....we've already heard about Shelley and the Girls of 436. Some of
us had a lot more fun with The Girls of 441, which is where Shelley
lived in 1986-1987. Jeff fenced for the fall of 1986, but drifted off
after Christmas.
In a fit of depression, Jeff graduated at the end of the 1986-1987 year
and both he and Leen moved out of College West at the end of August. I
think we were the last to leave; Steve left that spring, I think? Murray
and Fred were long gone, Kevin...who knows? Mike Sosteric had joined us
for a while but he was gone. Scott and John were gone before we ever got
there. Carel moved out in 1986. Kathy got married in May or June. An era
was over.
