LEAVING THE BOAT CHECKLIST

Here is a check list when you return hot and/or tired from you sailing adventure. It is easy to forget something. Leaving the Boat Checklist was developed from Sailing the Catalina 320 Single Handed: Part III - Returning to Berth

1. Detach the main halyard from the mainsail and attach it to the mast; replace the mainsail cover
2. Secure halyards to avoid halyard slap
3. Check all lines going to the cockpit for proper tension; close all rope clutches; tidy lines
4. Store winch handles and the boat hook
5. Lift outboard
6. Replace plastic covers on compass and outside electronics
7. Switch off all electronics, turn main panel and autohelm switches to OFF
8. Stow life horseshoe buoy, life jackets, binoculars, camera and other materials
9. Lock storage lazerette
10. Check that the forward hatch and other ports are closed
11. Remove any food not intended to stay on board
12. Close sea cocks and inspect the head and bilge to see that all is normal
13. Store the stern flag if used
14. Complete ship's log
15. Take companionway boards from storage and pass them to the cockpit
16. Check for car and club keys; take the cell phone
17. Grab gear and food bags and leave the cabin
18. Close up and lock the companionway
19. Go to the dock with the gear bag; close the lifelines
20. Check dock lines and fenders
