SHIP'S LOG FOR THE YEAR 2014

27S_8W_35T

This year marks the 35th anniversary for this particular Chrysler 26 sailboat.

2014 projects:

  1. Checked and repacked trailer bearings, replaced one inside bearing
  2. Repainted trailer with Grey Tremclad
  3. VC17 bottom coat
  4. Replaced batteries with Kirland Marine Deep Cycle/Starting batteries
  5. Repaired the ST1000+ Autohelm

At the end of the saling season the ST1000+ stopped working and stayed locked on one compass heading. Here are the links that lead me to resolve the problem (with a lot of luck). John posted a message about checking the integrity of the autohelm Flux Gate compass, M022 on the Trailersailerplace.com.au indicating that "Most of the time, the problem is inside the flexible cable, it is not repairable. Sometimes one of the small wires soldered around the compass body is loose, and can be resoldered". zebedee from the SailNet Forums posted a link to the Raymarine ST1000+ and ST2000+ Service Manual. madak52 posted a YouTube video showing the ST1000 and 2000 drive belt replacement explaining how to open up the ST1000+

Indeed The M022 fluxgate assembly did check out to be faulty. By chance I noticed that one of the fine wires from the coil was broken. After soldering a very small jumper wire the M022 fluxgate passed the DVM check, and the compass now reads properly. It was a bad year for the ST1000+ since I also broke the threaded cable connector, but this was easily repaired with Q-Bond.
