The James and
Kevin Show began on Access Communications in 1993 as a ten-minute segment
on a half hour series for teens called What's Up. The segments led
to a half hour comedy series called The James and Kevin Show running from
January 1995 to present. Some of the following segments are no
longer available.
City Side March 1994
What's Up Segments
Series One - James and Kevin
#1 Burger King
In July of 1993 James and Kevin ventured out on their first segment for
the teen magazine program on Access Communications called "What's Up".
The boys fried up several Whoppers made their way. Blake the Manager
joined in the fun. Directed by Jack S. Hilkewich; produced by Gursh
Madhur.
#2 The Red Cross Blood Donor Clinic
In their second segment, James and Kevin give blood. James has
the nurse pull the plug early to avoid fainting. Next time he will
eat a hearty breakfast first.
#3 Buffalo Days Fair
Originally this was going to be the only segment James and Kevin would
do. The half hour special featured James getting sick repeatedly.
What's Up hosts also contributed several segments about the annual
provincial fair.
#4 Government House
One of the least funny outings by the duo according to Kevin Allardyce.
James and Kevin go on a tour of Saskatchewan's historic Government House.
The only thing funny was the boom operator knocking over priceless
antiques. This is one of several segments which no longer exist on
videotape.
#5 Fire Fighting Training
The Regina Fire Department lucks out when two cable guys show up to
train as fire-fighters. James has to be rescued from a burning
house.
#6 Broadway's Pizza
The two boobs get jobs in a pizza parlor who's owner is not ready to go
easy on his new employees. James and Kevin decide to flee the scene
by making a delivery and end up watching Seinfeld with the family who
ordered a pizza.
#7 Maxwell's Amusements
Go-cart races. James has the pit crew supply him with chips and
pop.
The
James and Kevin One Hour Special
Regina Leader Post ad November 1993
The award-winning one hour compilation of the first group of What's Up
segments. James and Kevin host their first ever live television
special. Coverage starts as celebrities enter the Cable Station in
front of a crowd of signs and protesters of people who hate the show.
When James and Kevin exit their limousine James is shot in the chest by an
assassin. As James lay dying Kevin gives him strength to hold on to
life by reminiscing about their segments from the past season.
What's Up Segments Season
Two
#8 The Astrologer
Gary Zeila, the astrologer, examines James and Kevin's moon and
planets. This is another episode that no longer exists.
#9 Love Plus
The boys visit Keith and Jacki Lee at Regina's only sex shop.
Cable management censored some of the cover shots so footage of power
tools was inserted in place. February 1994.
#10 The Works
A visit to a trendy hair and makeover salon. James exits on a
shopping trip in the middle of his shampoo. Spring 1994 taped on the
day of John Candy's death.
#11 Mosaic Multicultural Festival
The boys show up at the Irish and Chines pavilions only to get the two
mixed up. Two important people appeared as interviewees in that
episode: a future girlfriend of Kevin's who he hadn't met at that
point (and wouldn't for several months) and Victor Yuen Access
Communications's web master. It's a coincidence that they showed up
in James and Kevin's lives years later. June 1994.
Saskatchewan Roughrider Special
August 1994
Kevin is given a spot on the Canadian Football League team but his 5'9"
frame is banged up badly in team practice. Premiered August 1994 as
a half hour What's Up special. Nominated as Best Cable Production at
the 1994 Showcase Awards.
A James and Kevin
Christmas
A half hour compilation of the previous years' segments. James is
found by a snotty teen aged Christmas angel after he passes out in a
downtown alley. He is depressed because the shows this year
weren't very funny and he wants to die. Kevin is the Christmas ghost
who revisits the segments with James, showing him that he still has a life
worth living.

Episode 1A
All Tied Up
James and Kevin find themselves tied up in an abandoned warehouse.
Segments include hosting an awards show in S and M gear, Agribition, Star
Trek club function, and others.
#2A Wide Shot Parody*
*no longer broadcast
The show's budget gets cut and they are unable to make any edits in the
show so they attempt to make a half hour show in one shot. The
unmanned camera gets stolen by two thugs who make a show of their
own. Also soap opera parodies with Susan Morley.
#3A
Dancing Lessons
James gets dancing lessons, soap opera parody "The Ways of Our Thighs",
Kevin Talks: the Urinal*. Evil James and Kevin: two men at a
cable station in Red Deer have an identical show with evil versions of our
heroes (script).
*Censored due to angry viewers complaining. Segment did
appear on the 1997 Eight Hour Marathon late at night.
#4 Death
and the Lawyer
Death (Robin Clark) plays patty cake with
lawyer John Ashton (Kevin Allardyce)
Death tries to collect lawyer John Ashton but he weasels his way out of
it in typical lawyer fashion. Also soap parodies "General Nauseum".
#5
Big Valley Country Music Festival
The guys put on their cowboy hats to visit the Craven Big Valley
Jamboree. They tour the drunks in the campgrounds and write the
Ebullient Song. Also Psychic Friends Hotline by James and a visit o
the Saskatchewan Science Center. The first appearance of the Friends
intro parody.

Exhibition Revisited
mini doughnuts are the order of the day on James and Kevin's second
visit to the fair two years after their original trip.

Couch Shot '96
A half hour of James and Kevin sitting on a couch without
saying a word. Another bold parody of the STV Regina program Wide

Rob Parrell: Bad Guy in Bad Cops
Bad Cops, a six minute trailer for a fictional action film starring
James and Kevin. Directed and produced by Dean Evans. Also parodies
of cable call-in shows and a trip to a children's' festival..
The Drive-in
This episode also appearing on Vision TV in Canada
This award-winning episode features a trip to the drive-in, bag pipe
lessons, the debut of Mr. Pencilhead, a parody commercial of Depends
Undergarments, and a music video parody of Alanis Morrissette's Ironic.
Segment directors Jay Robertson, Spyro Egohos, John Kennedy, and Jack
Hilkewich.
Halloween Show
New version is 4 minutes shorter due to an angry subject
of J and K's trick or treating.
Kevin gets a pencil attached to his head while James tries on costumes.
James (the devil) and Kevin (an arch bishop) go trick or treating in an
affluent neighborhood. Also *666, a parody of telephone services:
"Quickly connect with Satan".
Men Without
Shame
James and Kevin become roadies in the '70's cover band Men Without
Shame. Also several Sesame Street parodies.
Canadian Tire
A visit to the hardware chain Canadian Tire, plus curling lessons from
the world-champion Sandra Schmirler team. Original broadcast
included Ted Embury segment but was replaced with an encore of Bad Cops.

instructor passes out at the wheel Kevin has to talk him down from the
ground.

Apollo 13 parody. James gets stuck in an elevator
while testing it and Kevin is left on the ground to get him back with only
the items James has on the elevator.

Death and the Lawyer
Produced 1995
The popular comedy short produced on the
Access Communications series is now the first James and Kevin segment on
Canada's new comedy network. Robin Clark guest stars as Death,
the grim reaper who comes to take a young lawyer (Kevin) to his destiny.
The lawyer resists, however, and the rest is comedy.
Written by Robin Clark; directed and
photographed by Darryl Kesslar. Produced by John Kennedy.
Starring Kevin Allardyce (The Lawyer) and James Whittingham (himself).
