Are the ages that are noted on the website and registration forms strictly enforced?

No.  This is a guideline only.  T-Ball and SoftBall is a non-contact sport, therefore, age groups may vary.  Parents may request that siblings or friends be placed on the same team, even though they do not fit the age  category specified

How do I get in contact with the Co-ordinator?

Communication is done via the Website, which is parents/coaches/players first point of contact.  The website is:

 http://users.accesscomm.ca/southzonetball/

Or, you can email the co-ordinator—southzoneball@accesscomm.ca

When possible the Co-ordinator will send emails to individuals, coaches or teams.  The league must have player’s and coach’s email addresses.

How much does it cost to play T-Ball or SoftBall?

If you register early (prior to December 31), the cost is $35.00.  If you register between January 1 and March 31, the cost is $40.00.  If you register after March 31, the cost is $50.00.  The league accepts cash or cheque only.  If paying by cheque, please make the cheque payable to SZRB, and include the player’s first and last name and division number on the cheque.  Once payment is received, a receipt will be emailed to the email address provided by the player.

I haven’t been receiving email messages.

If you have not been receiving email messages, you need to contact the co-ordinator immediately by emailing:  southzoneball@accesscomm.ca.  When you send the email, indicate the player’s first and last name, and Division # in the Subject Field.    When a player is registered, they should receive an email within a couple of days after registration confirming their registration.  If a player did not receive this confirmation email, it is the responsibility of the player to contact the league.  Remember – all information is found on the website.

What do my registration fees cover?

Each player will receive a uniform which consists of a t-shirt, a ball cap with the player’s name embroidered on the cap, and an individual player card (if the player registers late, there may not be a player card issued).  Each team plays two games per week and the registration fee covers the cost of renting the ball diamonds.

What equipment do I need to purchase?

Players have to supply their own ball glove and their own player’s helmet.  It is mandatory for players to wear batting helmets when batting and when running the bases.  Therefore, the league will supply some helmets for each team.  Players should wear running shoes to each game.

How often do teams play?

Teams are scheduled to play twice a week, but this may change to due to rained-out games.  On the website – http://users.accesscomm.ca/southzonetball/ - Click on Division # on the Left and then on Schedule on the Top Menu.

How do I know if a game is cancelled?

Call the South Zone T-Ball and SoftBall Hotline – 565-1312, press 3.  During the regular T-Ball and SoftBall season (May and June) the hotline will be updated daily, after 4:30 pm on week days and after 10:00am on weekends.  During the regular season there is no opportunity to leave a message for the League – you must email:  southzoneball@accesscomm.ca.  Games will only be cancelled if the diamonds are wet, or if there is a thunder storm, or in the event of heavy rain or snow.

Will cancelled games be rescheduled?

They may be rescheduled, and if so, there will be notice on the website

How do I know if the schedule has been changed?

Parents/coaches/players should check the website immediately prior to the scheduled game to see if there have been schedule changes.  The league does try to email teams with scheduled changes, but it is not always possible.  Check the website – http://users.accesscomm.ca/southzonetball/ - Click on Division # on the Left and click on Schedule on the Top Menu.

How many players are on a team?

It varies from season to season.  For the 2011 T-Ball  season, there will be a maximum of 11 players per team.   For the 2012 Softball season, the teams will be made according to the number of players registered.

Can I play with my sibling and my friend?

If you register prior to March 31, we will ensure that friends and siblings play together on the same team, provided the team is not full.  If you register after April 1, we will do our very best to accommodate your request.  If the team is full, however, it may not be possible.

I want to help the team by coaching – how do I do that?

Simply indicate that you would like to coach or assistant coach when you register.  All coaches are volunteers and we appreciate their dedication.  We like to have at least two coaches per team.

Is there a coach’s clinic for new coaches or a review for returning coaches?

No.  When the coach arrives for uniform pickup and pictures, a representative from the League, usually the co-ordinator, will have a one-on-one discussion with the coach and answer any questions that the coach may have.

What is the responsibility of the coach?

T-Ball Coaches are given a binder with a batting and fielding roster.  The roster is predetermined by the league.  The roster lists the players in alphabetical order, by first name, and each player has an opportunity to bat first, last and in the middle; as well, all players will have the opportunity to play all positions in field.  The Coach is given a key to the equipment shed and it is the responsibility of the coach to pick up the equipment and set up for the game, or, to return the equipment to the equipment shed.  The schedule found on the website

http://users.accesscomm.ca/southzonetball - Click on Division # on the Left, Click on Schedule on the Top Menu – indicates which team picks up equipment and which team drops it off.   The job of the coach is to keep the game going and  to keep the players engaged.

SoftBall Coaches are given a softball notebook and are asked to prepare their own lineup adhering to the principals of the league – that being, every player has the opportunity to bat first, last and in the middle; as well as to play all positions in field.

Does each team get its own bag of equipment?

T-Ball equipment is kept in the Equipment Shed (the old ice shack) which is located by the Soccer Field  on Sunset Drive.  Coaches are given a key to the equipment shed and they pick up and return equipment for each game.

Softball Division 3 – Parent pitch – equipment will be in the equipment shed similar to T-Ball teams.  You won’t need a T.

Softball Division 4, 5 and 6 – Teams will receive one bag of equipment which the coach or assistant coach will keep until the end of the season.

I am a coach – how do I lock the shed?

The lock is tricky and sticks.  You need to insert the key into the lock and twist while pushing the lock together.

When do I get my uniform?

Uniforms will be distributed at the South Leisure Centre, 170 Sunset Drive.  Click on Uniform Pickup on the left.  Each team is given a time slot.  If you cannot attend your uniform pickup, you need to email the Co-ordinator to make alternate arrangements – southzoneball@accesscomm.ca

When do I get my picture taken for my individual player card?

Pictures are taken as the same time as uniforms are handed out.  Click on Uniform Pickup on the left.  Each team is given a time slot.  If you cannot attend, then you can email the Co-ordinator – southzoneball@accesscomm.ca.  The photographer will only be available during the days and times indicated on the schedule.   Unfortunately, there will not be another opportunity for pictures if players/coaches cannot attend.

When do I get my player card and the pictures I ordered?

Player cards and picture orders are generally ready after the season has finished—usually at the beginning of July.  Pickup is at the South Leisure Centre—170 Sunset Drive.  Dates and Times will appear on the first page of this website once the photographer has notified the league that they are ready for pickup.  If you cannot attend in person, then you may want to send a representative in your place.  Pictures will not be mailed and you cannot pick up pictures from the Co-ordinator’s home or the Photographer’s home.

How long does the T-Ball and SoftBall Season Run?

The season will start the last week in April, weather permitting, and will end the last week in June.

Can I drop off my player at the game and return at the end of the game to take the player home?

No.  In all divisions, a parent or guardian must stay with the player for the duration of the game.  In Division 1 and Division 2, T-Ball, parent’s assistance is required to help keep players on track and focused.  In Divisions 3, 4 and 5, parents are required to help coach 1st and 3rd base, help with equipment and occasionally umpire.  Also, in the case of an injury, a parent or guardian needs to be at the ball diamond.  Coaching staff and other parents are not responsible for your player.

What is the role of the parent/guardian at the diamond?

For T-Ball, parents need to assist the player with batting, running bases and fielding.  The coach is there to set up equipment, call out the batting order and fielding positions, but the coach does not have the time to help each player.

For Softball, parents need to help with coaching 1st and 3rd base, helping with equipment, umpiring, etc.

Can I still play if I showed up late to my ball game – and the game has started?

Yes.  The coach will insert the player into the battling line up and will position the player in field when it is safe to do so.

There are more than 9 players on my team.  If we all attend, do some of us sit out?

No.  All players who attend a game in all T-Ball and SoftBall divisions play.  If there are more than 9 players, then the extra players play ‘rover’ and the coach will position the player in field (most likely deep field).

Can we still play if less than 9 plays attend a ball game?

Yes.  In T-Ball, teams play with however many players attend the game.   In SoftBall, if there are fewer than 6 players, a team can ‘borrow’ a player or players from the opposing team

I play T-Ball – how do I know if the inning is over?

In T-Ball, both Division 1 and Division 2 – every player that attends the game bats.  The last player gets an automatic ‘home run’.  Once the last player has batted, then the teams switch places.  Once both sides have been in field and batted, the inning is over.

I play SoftBall – Parent Pitch  – how do I know if the inning is over?

In Division 3, every player that attends the game, bats. Each player gets 5 pitches.  The batter either gets a hit or the batter is  walked to first base.  The last player gets an automatic ‘home run’.  Once the last player has batted, then the teams switch places. Once both sides have been in field and batted, the inning is over.

I play SoftBall – how do I know if the inning is over?

In Divisions 4 and 5, typical softball rules are played.  Player pitch.  3 strikes, the batter is out.  4 balls, the batter is walked.  If the batter hits, the fielders have the opportunity to make an out.  3 outs and the side retires.  7 run mercy rule (when the 7th run is scored, the teams switch places), except in the last inning, in which case the inning is open-ended for both teams.  That is, the teams play until 3 outs.

Who should I contact if I cannot attend a T-Ball or SoftBall game?

The coach should establish whether the player needs to contact the coach prior to the game if the player is not going to attend.  Some coaches want to know – some coaches don’t.  Ask the coach what is preferred.

Will there be a Tournament or Windup?

Yes.  Tournaments are decided after the season starts and once the particulars are determined and the schedule is made, it is posted on the website and the hotline is updated.  There may or may not be an email communication.  Tournament information is found on the website –

http://users.accesscomm.ca/southzonetball/ - Click on the Division # on the Left, click on Tournament on the Top Menu.

Are tournament rules different from regular season rules?

Not for T-Ball.  Division 3, parent pitch, play a ‘typical’ softball game.  Division 4 and 5 rules are the same except the mercy rule changes to 5 runs from 7 runs.  All other tournament rules are posted on the website:

http://users.accesscomm.ca/southzonetball/ - Click on the Division # on the Left, click on Tournament on the Top menu.

How do I get an answer to a question that was not addressed above?

Email the co-ordinator – southzoneball@accesscomm.ca .  Please be as specific as possible and provide as much detail as possible.  If you asking a question about a particular player, please indicate the player’s first and last name, division number and team name in the email.
