Definition of a Goniometric Light

Simulates light sources with complex spatial characteristics using a 2D function to interpolate data which describes how light is emitted from the source in every direction. The data is available in one of four text formats from many lighting manufacturers. These are:

• CIE – Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage. An international standard.
• IESNA – Illuminating Engineering Society of North America. A North American standard.
• CIBSE – Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers. A British standard.
• EULUMDAT – A German standard.

The main purpose of goniometric lights is to provide accurate simulation of light sources such as luminaires, lamps and mantles for architectural visualisation.
