18th Patchwall (cont...)
Big battle with Uni and his minions. The party was successful.
From the diary of El'Fross:
We fought the most important battle of our lives today….at what could end up being the greatest cost imaginable.
Although S'Part decided to spend some time with the other clerics of Sehanine back at the temple in Unicks, the rest of us decided to enter Uni's underground hideout beneath the hut, outside of town. If Uni was alive, we had to know. The future of L'Tir and our race hung in the balance.
We tried sneaking in the back way. As usual, our tactics left something to be desired. Coderick set off the steam trap, which we knew was there…however the trigger was either moved or we forgot where it was – to be honest, I can't say for sure upon reflection. Either way, the element of surprise was lost as we clambered up the stairs to avoid the steam damage.
I cast a spell which allowed me to move quickly, and rushed to the door of the hut. The others followed, except for L'Wen who stayed behind in case anyone came out the back. We waited at the door listening….using my superior movement, I kept going back and forth between the hut and back entrance, itching to attack before our enemies could prepare. Finally the door opened and a small creature opened the door and S'NFL killed it. The rest of the party went into the hut as I checked on L'Wen. Rushing back into the hut, I noted everyone standing around, looking down the ladder to the underground hideout. I took the initiative and rushed down the ladder. I was faced with two more of the smallish creatures and several orcs, standing behind them. Luckily S'NFL followed and we engaged the creatures.
Soon everyone had followed and soon we were all crowded in the 10 by 10 room as SNF'l battled at the door way. Coderick went to check the back entrance that L'Wen had abandoned to join the fight. As S'NFL continued his one-elf assault, the rest of us waited for an opening. X'Ylo yelled down the ladder that he and Coderick were being attacked on the surface. Unable to help here, I climbed back up the ladder, followed by L'Wen. Leaving S'Nfl and A'ha to face the menace underground.
On the surface I found Coderick leaping and tumbling frantically around trying to avoid being squished by a very large Orc. Assisting the Orc in the assault on our comrades was none other than Teur…. That sealed it for me….Uni was alive and using the mind control rings on Teur. An elf was behind Teur and the Orc. He was fair skinned and dark haired…. UNI ! – it had to be. To complicate matters – two other orcs had joined the battle.
Uni sent a ball of flames toward Cocerick who avoided it deftly. L'Wen was amidst Teur and the three orcs. I hesitated. Should I stay to help L'Wen or confront Uni, who I felt was controlling all of our foes? L'Wen would be fine, I thought…. She's tougher than all of us, right?
I moved to Uni ready to unleash a mighty swing of my sword. He turned his flames on me and moved away. I was burned badly.
Then an idea struck me. Uni had used a spell that would teleport him away the first time he was struck with a blow – I changed tactics. Stepping away from the flames, I pulled out the scroll the wizard had given me to change A'ha from a bear to an elf months ago. I remembered that it had several versions of the spell inscribed. I read the spell, directing it towards Uni….except instead of elf, I said trout. Soon our nemesis was flopping on the ground gasping for, er…water.
Just as Uni was transformed the large Orc scored a lucky and devastating blow to L'Wen who crumpled – very nearly cut in half. Before I could rush to her aid, Coderick picked up the fish and in his most menacing tone, bellowed. "Nobody move… or the fish gets it!"
Undeterred, the large Orc moved towards Coderick who promptly stabbed the fish, which then disappeared. The teleportation! Knowing where he was going, I was faced with yet another decision. Aid L'Wen who probably was, but I wasn't sure, dead, or finish what we had started. I sprinted down the stairs, over the trap to the teleportation platform in the hideout where I found the fish still flopping around….I dealt it a mighty blow and it stopped moving. I ran back up the stairs with fish back to the battle where I dealt it another blow. The fish became a heavy and quite dead drow elf – UNI – who dropped out of my hands on to the ground.
Coderick was now down – Teur, who was back under his own control after Uni's death, and I were left facing three orcs…then it was Teur alone. I came to a while later. S'NFL, X'ylo, A'ha and Teur surrounding me. My worst suspicions were true – L'Wen was dead.
The others wanted to burn Uni – I agreed and began searching for wood – frantic to get the gruesome deed done so we could get L'Wen to the restoration pool.
The victory, though important, felt hollow and meaningless. What was the point in protecting L'Tir and the others at the expense of L'Wen, I wondered? Did I do the right thing? Could my presence have made a difference? Will we be able to bring her back? Will she understand my abandoning her if we do? These questions weighed so heavily on my mind, that I couldn't even muster a "I told you so – Uni was alive…' for S'NFl.
I no longer cared what the others thought of me. I no longer desired to be thought of as brave, or cunning or smart. I didn't feel the need to prove my worth to them or to anyone. I just wanted L'Wen back. Today, for the first time since the destruction of K'Nee, I cried.
