Round Lake IX 1993

Fishing Lake, Saskatchewan

Photos from the Round Lake Weekend 1993

Steve letting the Video inspire new memories in 2004: I set up the video camera to capture the soccer game we were playing. At first I thought this segment was quite boring - the camera did not move or zoom for quite awhile as it sat on its tripod. But then I realized that people are moving constantly in and out of the frame - there are children on bikes and people running and girls carrying stuff and it is actually quite good. And of course, I planned it that way...
It is interesting for me to note that at that time I seemed to have the largest beer belly, but now I have one of the smallest. Not because I have lost any weight, but because of the "soft living" of some of you other gents.
I recall now that this is the other weekend that Shelley and I did not fight. An agreement was made in advance that we would try to tolerate each other the entire weekend. This happened again in 2004. This was in part responsible for the singing event where John and I tried to convert every song that we knew to be a song about "beer". It was 'way too much fun, and we even made Shelley laugh a few times before she went to bed.
Video: Sat. July 31/93: I think Scott, Duncan, Tasha (the baby) and Kandi were the first ones there. Holly, Sean, Murray, Debbie, Shelley and Steve arrived as a group, and Russ and Ryan got there just after. There was some trouble and confusion erecting Russ' new mosquito proof Poker Gazebo. Apparently we tried to put it up upside down. Shelley and I left Melany with her Mom and Dad, and we started missing her just about right away. Fred was rumored to not be making it (which turned out to be true) and we all did the "Hi Fred" thing in good form. We tried to get little Ryan to do it, but he refused at first. It was very windy and not really very nice. Shelley and I took my Dad's old van - it held everything we could possibly need. I think this was the only year I didn't wonder how Shelley was going to fit "all that stuff" into our vehicle.
On day two, John & Trudy, Andy & Heather, Paul & Shannon, Jeff and Leen & Alison were there. In an extremely rare moment, Holly shared her Pepsi with someone who wasn't using it for mix, and even rarer, it was a child (Duncan)! Jeff, I know you have a picture with John holding Duncan, because I filmed you taking it, so where is it? Cough it up! Kandi let Russ hold baby Tasha - she is very brave. My sister Kathy and her son Matt came out too.
The girls did some Female Bonding, which is much scary than Male Bonding. Debbie discusses my oysters, which does nothing to make me comfortable. I set the camera up on a tripod to record our soccer game, which is mostly boring, but does show the lack of stomachs some of us had at one time and I had an excellent wrassle with Ernie the dog. Andy, Murray and Steve take on Russ, Jeff and Paul for soccer. Debbie doesn't pinch my ass, which I am still, to this day, grateful for. John and Scott join the game as well, but they both join Jeff's team. I guess Jeff needs the help. Jeff and Paul do Hi-5 with their chests. Leen evens things up by joining my team. Murray and Russ collide. While Jeff films my sister's butt, he misses the hit that gives John the nosebleed. Too bad - it might have won us some money on America's Funniest Home Videos. Leen pushes Paul backwards over Steve. Apparently Sean got the winning goal. Jeff models the latest from his lingerie collection. We almost all were wearing Saskatchewan farmer hats (not Shannon).
Kathy P: There also was the year Matthew fell in the fire. That would have been at Fishing Lake. He was either 4 or 5. (probably 5).
