Order PSITTACIFORMES
Family PSITTACIDAE
[Lories. Parrots. Macaws]
Agapornis Selby
Agapornis cana (Gmelin) [Madagascar Lovebird. Grey-headed Lovebird]
x Agapornis roseicollis (Vieillot) [Peach-faced Lovebird]

The hybrids are said to be fertile.

Legendre, M. 1936.
x Melopsittacus undulatus (Shaw) [Budgerigar]
            "Male"
Madagascar Lovebird x "female" Budgerigar.  There are a
few records

of alleged hybridization, but the reliability of such reports is questioned
both by

Cayley and by Prestwich.  Page has reported a hybrid that lived to
leave the nest.
            Braune,
-. Cayley, N. W. 1938; Gefiederte Weldt, Die 1890; Hokinson, E.
1926,

1941; Neunzig, K. 1921; Page, W. T. 1918a; Prestwich, A. A. 1943a

Agapornis fischeri Reichenow [Fischer's Lovebird]
x Agapornis roseicollis (Vieillot) [Peach-faced Lovebird]

The two species cross readily.  Reciprocal hybrids have been reported.
According

to Legendre, the hybrids are fertile.  Prestwich (1950) has given
a brief description

of 3 young hybrids reared in France

Delacour, J. 1930, 1931; Hampe, H. 1939; Hopkinson, E. 1930, 1931a,
1933a, 1941;

Legendre, M. 1936; Olivaux, M. C. 1929; Prestwich A. A. 1929, 1950

Agapornis lilianae Shelley [Nyasa Lovebird]
x Agapornis roseicollis (Vieillot) [Peach-faced Lovebird]

The cross has occurred in both directions.  The hybrids are fertile.
Hopkinson has

recorded several backcrosses produced by a hybrid "female" mated
to a Nyasa "male"

. A markedly quarrlesome "male" hybrid described by Warren was a
little smaller than

the mother (roseicollis) but larger than the sire.  The incubation
period was about 18 days.

Agapornis nigrigenis W. L. Sclater [Black-cheeked Lovebird]
x Agapornis roseicollis (Vieillot) [Peach-faced Lovebird]

The two species are said to interbreed readily.  According to Marriner,
the hybrids are

fertile inter se.

Delacour, J. 1930; Hampe, H. 1939; Hopkinson, E. 1926, 1933a, 1941;
Legendre, M. 1936;

Marriner, J. S. 1927; Prestwich, A. A. 1928
x Melopsittacus undulatus (Shaw) [Budgerigar]
            "Male"
black-cheeked lovebird x "female" Budgerigar.  There is a report
in Bird Notes,

1911, of 4 hybrids which hatched and were said to be doing well.
The authenticity of the

report has been questioned by Cayley,  Hopkinson (1941) and Prestwich
            Bird
Notes 1911d; Cayley, N. W. 1938; Hopkinson, E, 1926, 1941; Prestwich,

Agapornis personata Reichenow [Masked Lovebird]
x Agapornis roseicollis (Vieillot) [Peach-faced Lovebird]
The cross has occurred in both directions. The hybrids are said to be fertile.

"male" masked x "female" Peach-faced Lovebird.  A "male"
hybrid described by Hill

tended to resemble roseicollis in size and coloration.

Ara, L. A. 1952b; Delacour, J. 1930; Hampe, H. 1939; Hill, W. C.
O. 1942; Hopkinson, E. 1931a

1933a, 1941; Kelly, A. L. 1949; Legendre, M. 1936; Prestwich, A.
A., 1949c
x Melopsittacus undulatus (Shaw) [Budgerigar]
Presumed hybrids have been reported. They appeared to be sterile
            Gjessing,
G. A. 1953.

Agapornis pullaria (Linnaeus) [Red-headed Lovebird. Red-faced Lovebird]
x Agapornis roseicollis (Vieillot) [Peach-faced Lovebird]

The hybrids are said to be fertile.

Legendre, M. 1936.
x Melopsittacus undulatus (Shaw) [Budgerigar]
Boosey and Prestwich both doubt the authenticity of this reputed cross.
            Boosey,
E. 1952, Prestwich, A. A. 1943a.
