Experience:
The site where I used to just type in numbers and click a button for the results is gone (damn). I therefore calculate the level of the party to be: (5 + 8 + 5 + 8 + 5 + 5)/6 = 6th. The Umber Hulk was CR 7, but I think that's a bit low for an estimate, so I'm giving it CR 8. That's 3600xp divided by all members of the party that participated, whether dead or not (this latter taken from the new DMG page 169) which means 600xp each. The experience from the encounter is applied after any level loss due to death, according to the DMG.
So, characters who died and then raised were put to the mid-point of their previous level and then the xp for the Umber Hulk was added.
As a side note, I forgot all about Sheh'Tep, and there is no way I am going back and redoing the xp, so I am giving Sheh'Tep 600xp as well. I think that the toughness of the monster justifies this.
A'Ha (4th Level) - 600xp - was at 12,222xp - DIED which put him at 8,000xp - plus the 600xp = 8,600xp
- needs 10,000 for 5th level
El'Fross (7th Level) - 600xp - was at 29,150xp - DIED which put him at 24,500xp - plus the 600xp = 25,100xp
- needs 28,000 for 8th level
L'Wehn (5th Level) - 600xp - was at 13,143xp - puts her at 13,743xp - needs 15,000 for 6th level
Sheh'Tep (4th Level) - 600xp - was at 9,320xp - puts him at 9,920xp - needs 10,000 for 5th level
Snf'L (8th Level) - 600xp - was at 28,672xp - puts him at 29,272xp - needs 36,000 for 9th level
S'Part (4th Level) - 600xp - was at 12,526xp - was at 12,526xp - DIED which put him at 8,000xp - plus the 600xp = 8,600xp
- needs 10,000 for 5th level
X'Ylo (5th-6th Level) - 600xp - was at 14,896xp - puts him at 15,496xp -
Congratulations on 6th Level!
- needs 21,000 for 7th level
Coderick - ?xp - was at 23,760xp - puts him at 23,760xp - needs 28,000 for 8th level
1st Ready'Reat
The party attempts to rest after the fight with the huge insectoid thing and the death of S'Part by the hands of a very confused Snf'L. As the night progresses, the thing comes back and attacks again. Even in his weakened state, Snf'L manages to kill the thing, but also kills A'Ha and El'Fross in his confused state. L'Wehn is beside herself with grief.
2nd Ready'Reat
The remainder of the party cuts off fingers of the dead and collect all their stuff. They head off forthe pool of restoration. They travel for the whole day, arriving at the river around nightfall.
3rd Ready'Reat
It costs the party 50gp to get across. "Hidden finger fuckin' bones" <-- (anybody know what my notes mean here? Damn Braggot.)
4th Ready'Reat
Head to the pool and arrive. All characters brought back OK, but we are waiting to hear whether S'Part is OK or not. We'll have to see next week. (Anyone have any idea why I wrote "S'Part taken back to instill trust. Hawk to look for li Snf'L to pay for Ferrie"?
From the diary of El'Fross:
I died today. What an odd experience….that I am writing about it now is even odder. Without getting into the gory details or assigning unnecessary blame, let’s just say I was once again dealt a mortal blow by one of my own comrades. (The big, tough, not overly bright, honest to a fault, two handed sword wielding, self proclaimed conscience of the group - without naming names) To give him a bit of a break, he was under a spell - I think.
As I died, a peace overcame me - a wonderfully serene peace. My ancestors whispered comforting words. Sehanine sent a messenger, telling me I would begin this journey another time, and that I should prepare for my return to oerth. I thought of L’Tir, of my family, my friends, and of L’Wen. And suddenly in a flash of light, I was walking out of the restoration pool we have used so many times in the past. In an instant, I experienced my own mortality, first hand. A’ha was also killed, though he must be getting used to that by now.
For a compulsively honest guy, SNF’l seemed willing to bend reality for his own rationalisation and comfort - a bit more pleased with the fact that I had died than I would have thought. I don’t think he really wished me to stay dead, but he is happy that I can no longer claim to be the only one in the group to not have died, which I find more than a little strange. Surely his childish, competitive nature doesn’t cloud his vision that much? He hasn’t really come to terms with the fact that he can be blamed for almost every death that has occurred in the group either directly or indirectly, with perhaps the exception of L’Wen. That one was my fault.
And speaking of L’Wen, her complete lack of concern at my return speaks volumes in itself. Clearly she is more concerned with hatred than love. Unfortunately, I am unwilling to follow her down the path of hatred, for I am certain it leads to doom. I am hopeful she will one day return to the ways of the Schef elves. Until then I can only hope she survives her hatred.
As for me, I am happy to be alive and unwilling to let either SNF’l s irrational behaviour, or L’Wen’s indifference change my path or my faith. L’Tir still awaits us.
